April Birthstones

Diamonds are the April Birthstone

diamond ring

The April birthstone is the Diamond The concept of a birthstone is found in many traditions, customs, and beliefs. Today there’s a birthstone associated with each month of the year.  The idea of one gem for each month and also the concept of wearing your “birth stone” started between the 16th and 18th centuries or even earlier.  Some people believe that the beginnings of the concept of “birthstones” dates back to the breastplate of Aaron.  The breastplate was ornamented with twelve gemstones to represent the twelve tribes of Israel.

Wearing your birthstone is supposed to bring you luck, but suppose you don’t like your birthstone!   There are alternative choices – the National Association of Jewelers released a list of so-called “modern birthstones” in the United States in 1912. The “Modern birthstone” list differs from the Traditional list in a number of ways.  Sun Signs and Star Signs will provide even more choices.

The primary “Traditional” birthstone for April is a diamond.  Even you if stick with a diamond you still have lots of choice – a wide variety of colored diamonds are available in addition to the colorless variety.  Traditional birthstones include a mix of transparent and opaque gems while the modern list features only transparent gems. Traditional birthstone choices for April are diamond, opal, and sapphire, but you can also consider rock crystal (quartz) or another white/clear stone like white topaz.

I don’t have any diamonds for you, but here’s a lovely brand new set of faceted rock crystal earrings and necklace the are available now – perfect for Spring and Summer!  Introductory price, too.  Check out the set
