Looking at Ways to Simplify My Life

Simplifying my Life – Like a lot folks I know, I’ve been looking at ways to simplify my life. My husband and I are at a point where we are more interested in “skinnying down” than in acquiring more things. I’ve been following some tips from Courtney Carver who has a “Be More with Less” website and blog. I’ve found some of her ideas interesting and helpful. I’d like to share my experience with you.
After moving to Santa Fe, we rented a storage unit for “overflow”. It wasn’t meant to be long term, but we didn’t have space for some things in our home. To make a long story short, we still have the storage unit! Our goal is to close it out by the end of this year. It was neatly organized at the beginning, but it has gotten cluttered and clogged with stuff we just “shoved in.”
Life changes – we got rid of the RV, but we still have lots of RV stuff. That’s all in the storage space, too! We loved traveling in the RV and for a long time we were clinging to the idea that we’d have another RV “one of these days.” Well, “one of these days” isn’t coming, so the RV stuff will be donated along with a lot of other things.
As the old song* goes “you finally have to decide.” You have to decide what’s really important, you have to decide to make space, you have to decide to make time. I have set some goals – made the decisions in my own life and I am putting them into practice: closets are emptying, lots of things from storage have been donated or discarded, and we are moving forward. I’ve reorganized our clothes and closets. There is still more to do, but we’ve accomplished a lot. We are much more mindful about what we are eating these days, too. We’ve been fortunate to be pretty healthy.
