May is the unofficial start of summer with lots of events and things to do outdoors.   Here are a couple of things to see and do in New Mexico:

Fiber Arts Fiesta 2019 – the  12th Biennial Albuquerque Fiber Arts Fiesta is set for Thursday, May 30 through Saturday, June 1, 2019.  The show is at the Manuel Lujan Jr, Exhibit Complex, 300 San Pedro NE – Albuquerque. Doors open at 10am daily and the show closes at 5pm.  In addition to featured quilt artist, Betty Busby, there will be many fiber art exhibits from across the country.  Fiber Arts classes are also being offered – sign up on the council website  www.abqfiberartscouncil.org

May’s traditional birthstone is the Emerald, but you have alternatives – traditional, modern, stones associated with your zodiac sign, etc.  The traditional birthstone list includes a mix of transparent and opaque gems, while the modern list features only transparent gems. An alternate choice for May is agate – available in lots of colors.  (The Zodiac signs of Gemini and Taurus include sapphire and agate.). Sun Signs and Star Signs will provide even more choices so have fun!

Memorial Day is an American holiday.  It’s on the last Monday of May and honors men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.  Originally known as Decoration Day, this observance began in the years following the Civil War.  Memorial Day became an official federal holiday in 1971.   Memorial Day is observed by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. For many people, Memorial Day marks the beginning of the summer season.
