September New Mexico Events

Labor Day kicks off the Fall season.
Labor Day is celebrated on the first Monday in September. This holiday celebrates a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. We traditionally celebrate with parades and picnics. It is on September 6 for 2021.
According to the US Labor Department, the first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City. By 1894, 23 more states had adopted this holiday. President Grover Cleveland signed a law on June 28, 1894 making the first Monday in September of each year a national holiday.
Here’s a batch things to do in New Mexico in September
Zozobra, 9/3 – An all day family celebration at Ft. Marcy park. The celebration culminates in the burning of a giant marionette of Old Man Gloom (Zozobra) that represents all your troubles of the previous year, providing a fresh start. Will Shuster started this event in the 1920s and it has become a Santa Fe tradition. Anyone with an “excess gloom” is encouraged to write down on a piece of paper and leave it in the “gloom box” found in City of Santa Fe Visitors’ Centers in the weeks leading up to the burn. The burning of Zozobra happens around 9 pm
Hatch Chile Festival 9/2 and 9/ 3 in Hatch, NM
2021 Harvest Wine Festival 9/4 from 12 – 6 PM at Balloon Fiesta Park, 9401 Balloon Fiesta Pkwy NE in Albuquerque, NM
Fiesta de Santa Fe. 9/1- 9 Fiesta is an annual event commemorating Don Diego De Vargas’ peaceful reoccupation of the City of Holy Faith in 1692. The historic capital is one of the oldest in the United States. Aspects of this event and the history surrounding the “peaceful reoccupation” has become very controversial during the years I’ve lived here. Zozobra marks the start of the Festival.
